GENERAL NOTES:
From accounts by Ethel May MORCOM, daughter, and Doris Rule BABLE, granddaughter of William [Ethel cited by Wendy GARNER on USGENWEB]:William MORCOM and his three brothers and half-brother, Rodolphus, of Tywardreath, Cornwall, arrived in Garnet, MT, about 1885 via California and Colorado. [[Ken SIMMS believes they were also in Michigan with his grandmother's THOMAS family, before they all moved to Montana.They worked at Anaconda mines as miners and mine agents, and `staked a claim' to start a ranch. The property they selected was three miles from Clinton, and south east of Misoulla. The little spare time they had was spent building a log cabin, out buildings and establishing the ranch. Other sources imply that the ranch was at Garnet. Maybe the brothers were gold mining at Garnet (now a ghost town) and had a residence there, but the ranch they were developing was near Clinton and about 20 miles west of Garnet.
William returned to Cornwall in 1890, married Susanna SLEEP in 1891, and returned with her to Montana. Susanna kept house for William and his brothers. When Susanna became pregnant, William decided she should go up to Garnet, so she might be near Mrs Page (midwife) when the time arrived. On a cold and snowy day in November , William hitched up his sturdy team of horses to the cart, and up the mountain they went to Mrs Page's cabin. It was a good decision, as the winter was severe. Ethel was born safely, and it was April 1893 before the roads were passable enough to return to the Morcom ranch.Life was hard for the Morcoms. It was difficult to get used to the cold, and all the hard work, after living in the milder climate of Cornwall. Susanna looked forward to the Indians passing by, and often traded them a hot diner for cutting firewood, or bringing her water from the pumps.
William and Susanna returned to Cornwall before Violet Ada's birth in October 1894, living in Liskeard.In 1912 they sailed for America with their family and settled in Ironwood, MI. William lost his leg in a mine accident in Ironwood MI and had Black Lung disease.
